I usually don't like to think about Christmas during the summer, much preferring the warm weather to the snow, but this gift takes some work. If you decided you want to do something similar, I want to make sure I give you some time to get it together by this Christmas. Although it takes some time to get it together, I promise it's more rewarding than you could imagine learning more about your family's history, and especially when you see your grandparent's faces light up with joy.

For Christmas this year, I finished converting all of my grandparents old slides (almost 400!) to digitals and played them on a slideshow for my family at Christmas. It made Christmas extra sweet to hear my grandparents and mom reminisce on old times, and to hear my Grandpa say over and over that it reminded him what a blessed life they have had. I still remember my grandma exclaiming, "That's my daddy!" at the start of a slide was one of the cutest things I've witnessed. Then with the next picture followed, she explained that it was probably one of the only pictures with both her dad and her brother in it. After Christmas, I finished a photo book of the slides, taking into account which photos I had learned from them were extra special.

I want to encourage everyone to try to do something like this for your grandparents or parents because it really meant a lot to them, and was equally special for me to learn more of my family’s memories. For converting the slides, my dad got me a converter off of amazon a few years back “The Wolverine F2D Film to Digital converter” (He did this so we could convert his family’s old negatives… I’ll have to do a post on those old photos sometime because there was a really interesting story in that) I was also made aware of another possible way to convert- I got an ad for a phone app that can convert your slides just last week. It did have a small monthly fee, so I didn’t test it out, but if a lot of people were interested I totally would test it for you guys. I hope this inspires you! Ask your parents and grandparents if they have any old slides or photographs that you can convert or scan in for them. I would love to hear about it!

I made my book through Snapfish, which I use for most of my personal photo products. 4x6s prints are my most common order. I take thousands of pictures every month, and so too keep up with printing out even just my favorite pictures can add up. Snapfish is by far my best option for getting a good deal on the quantity I want for decent quality. Cheaper than even Walmart and SO much better quality. You do have to pay shipping but with using their coupons it always still turns out A LOT cheaper than Walmart, CVS, Walgreens, all those kind of stores. **I am an affiliate for Snapfish as of just recently, but I have been using them for over 10 years! As I always promise, I only promote products I use and love. If you use my link to get to Snapfish, I get a small portion of the sale at no cost to you and it's really appreciated.

Snapfish always has coupons you can apply to your order at checkout! You can find what deals are currently running on the Snapfish Deal's Page.

  1. Join Facebook Groups Specific to Your Type of Business

Facebook Groups give you access to guidance from other professionals in your same line of work. You can learn from each others experiences, and quickly get an answer to questions you have from people that have more experience than you.

For Video related things, the group I get the best tips and advice from is How to Film Weddings (HTFW) by John Bunn & Nick Miller. It has proven to be incredibly helpful, ever since diving into film-making. Ps. They also have an awesome podcast! What a gift it is to have access to advice from so many industry leaders. They are really great about answering your questions. I love that the world has changed from guarding secrets to wanting others to succeed along with them.

KJ Education is the most helpful Facebook group I'm in for Photography. It's made by a really talented photographer and educator, Katelyn James + her team. To get access to this group I did have to buy one of her classes (I have taken 4 courses from her at this point) or be apart of her "All Access" where you watch her throughout a whole wedding day or an engagement session each month. All her education is well worth whatever you pay and then some. In her group, you can get advice from hundreds of the other students/photography professionals in the group who are really careful about responding in encouraging ways and not attacking like you may elsewhere on facebook. (HTFW is good about keeping things kind as well)

2. Get a Client Management System

This has made my job so tremendously easier. I'm not big on some of these tedious, not creative, but necessary tasks that go with running a business. Think sending contracts , scheduling, and gosh did I struggle with keeping a consistent workflow. Until I got Dubsado. They make it so easy to send all forms safely over the internet, contracts are signed electronically, all my forms are saved in one place and easy to edit to fit specific clients and services. I can send questionnaires, style guides, etc. and design all these forms quickly and in a professional design. They even have some ready made forms and questionnaires. I really like making my own though. Dubsado I highly recommend. They're running a sale right now actually! If you use my affiliate link it gives you a discount as well as me! https://www.dubsado.com/?c=3685 The code is 3685 if it asks, but I think all you need to do use is that link for the discount. :)

3. Schedule Your Social Media Content

Is it wrong to post one that I am not currently doing a good job at? Even so, I want to mention it. If you can pick a certain day to schedule your social media content for the week, or even a couple weeks, it can really make it easier to stay on track with posting as often as you should. You want your business to stay fresh in your clients minds. It can be hard to stop what you're doing every couple days and think of something to post. If you schedule a time each week to plan out a bunch of posts it can make things a lot easier. For a time I used Planoly. Time to end this post and and make sure I take my own advice with this 3rd tip! As well as test out Planoly's current features, or find the best app for scheduling posts so I can let you guys in on it! Let me know if you already have one you love!
